DNC on Husted v. A Philip Randolph Institute

DNC Chair Tom Perez, who joined an amicus brief in this case with former DOJ officials, and DNC Vice Chair Karen Carter Peterson released the following statement after the U.S. Supreme Court issued its opinion in Husted v. A. Philip Randolph Institute:

“Today’s decision is an attack on democracy. By allowing Ohio’s aggressive voting roll purges under the National Voter Registration Act, the court has overturned longstanding DOJ policy that had been followed by both Republican and Democratic administrations. This ruling emboldens Republicans in states across the country in their efforts to remove millions from their rolls simply for not voting.

“Make no mistake: this case was about nothing more than Ohio Republicans trying to tilt elections in their favor by blocking communities of color from the ballot box – all under the guise of preventing ‘voter fraud.’

“The American people aren’t fooled. They see these attacks for what they are: a blatant power grab by a Republican Party that wants to make it harder for people to vote.

“But our fight is far from over. Democrats believe we should be making it easier for people to vote, not harder. We know our democracy is stronger when more people can participate. And we will keep fighting to protect and expand the right to vote for all Americans, even if Republicans won’t.”
