THE LATEST: White House Demands To Be Allowed To Separate Families

Families belong together. But instead of working to reunite the more than 2,500 children they forcibly separated from their families, the Trump administration is doubling down on their anti-immigrant policies that created this humanitarian crisis.

Yesterday the White House demanded that it be allowed to keep children separated from their families.

“The injunction must be removed immediately or we can’t keep the country safe.” – Deputy Press Secretary Lindsay Walters aboard Air Force One

The Trump administration forcibly separated nearly 1,800 more children from their parents that they failed to disclose.

NBC News: “But numbers provided to NBC News by the Department of Homeland Security show that another 1,768 were separated from their parents between October 2016 and February 2018, bringing the total number of separated kids to more than 4,100.”

The Trump administration is looking at a plan that would bar undocumented immigrants, and likely stop most Central Americans, from being able to seek asylum.

Vox: The Department of Justice, under Attorney General Jeff Sessions, is drafting a plan that would totally overhaul asylum policy in the United States. Under the plan, people would be barred from getting asylum if they came into the US between ports of entry and were prosecuted for illegal entry. It would also add presumptions that would make it extremely difficult for Central Americans to qualify for asylum, and codify — in an even more restrictive form — an opinion written by Sessions in June that attempted to restrict asylum for victims of domestic and gang violence.”

This fight is far from over. Democrats will not let up until the Trump administration ends its inhumane policies and reunites all of the children they separated with their families.

“The thing we’ve been doing that’s enabled us to make progress is organizing, protesting, causing good trouble. That’s what we have to continue to do. We can’t let up.” – DNC Chair Tom Perez in Brownsville, Texas
